In Loving Memory of Grandpa Curly

On Friday August 11th, 2006, my grandpa Curly (De Grand) left this world to begin a new existence. He valiantly battled a blood cancer (plasmacytoma which progressed into a multiple myeloma) since October 2005. Last week in the peace of his home and comfort of his wife and friend God called him home.

In November 2006 I will walk a marathon (26.2 miles) in honor and memory of him. My efforts are in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma society's Team in Training program. While training to complete a marathon those of us who are team in training members not only strive to increase awareness of blood cancers, but also help the society raise money to attain its mission to cure these types of cancers.

My grandpa was always a fast walker and LOVED the outdoors. His spirit lives in me and has been the motivation for me to believe I can accomplish something like this despite the hurdles that have been set in my path. I know my grandpa will be with me every step of the way.

Please click on the lighthouse link in the post title to see some photos of my grandpa I would like to share with you.

The following poem I would like to dedicate in memory of my grandpa who I believe is still with us.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there
I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds
In circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there
I did not die

Becky - I am so sorry to hear about your Grandpa passing away. I know how much he was loved and how much he will be missed.

I am reading your blog through tear filled eyes and a sinking feeling in my heart. I think of you so often and always wonder how you are. I would love to get in touch with you - there is so much we've missed over the years. You are always in my prayers and in my heart. I just discovered the blog thing and not sure how it works yet, but drop me a line at bmotto@turnerheritage.com. I would love to chat with you.
Take care and say hello to Harley for me.

hey Rebecca.... just an overseas reader from Malaysia. I followed the link to your site from Yvonne Foong's site. Just want you to know that you also are an inspiration to us all. Inner strength and a determination to succeed is rarely seen nowadays in the "paris hilton" generation. You rock girl! :)

Brenda!

It is fantastic to hear from you! LOL I keep checking the classmates site to see if your email is one there but I am not a paying member. Hence, I never have access to emails and looks as if the majority of our class does not either.

I just got into the blog last year when I was ill and had time at home with the computer. I was spending a large amount of time on the Cyberknife Society forum speaking with doctors and other patients of various brain tumors and other ailments. There I met a friend who also has NF2 and also started a blog.

I learned more about it from him and enjoyed reading his blog. Thus he suggested to me to start my own blog where I can keep better track of my progress and also keep people informed.

I will shoot you an email. It will be short as I have many fund raising duties this week for the upcoming marathon I will be walking in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

It will be great to catch up! Maybe you can fill me in and I will read until I can respond back after this fund raising garage sale I am holding this week.

Thanks for finding me and chat with ya soon!

Chloe.

Thank you so much for your warm sentiments!

One of my very good friends is from Malaysia but has lived in Seattle for some time now. She is one of my friends who was on my Relay For Life team. I posted a slideshow of photos of us in the archives from last month.

My friend has shared with me pictures of the beauty of your country. I hope that I get to visit there some day!

I have learned in life the importance of surrounding oneself with inspirational people with similiar goals or missions in life. Fortunately, I have been extremely lucky to have been blessed with such individuals. I would not be who I am and able persevere in the face of adversity without God bringing these courageous and supportive people into my life. The more I learn from such inspirational human beings, the more I become humbled.

Thank you for your gracious compliment! It is quite an honor! :o)
